People often ask me why I feel so strongly about not putting up Christmas décor until after Remembrance Day; after all, I’m a Property Manager in the retail sector. I believe our soldiers, past and present, deserve to be honoured. At the very least, they have earned one day of our undivided attention. However, my need to remember and honour those brave men and women goes much deeper.
Schools used to be closed on Remembrance Day, so there was always an assembly the day before. On November 10th, 1982, I remember attending such an assembly. Part way through, I leaned over to the person beside me and I said, “I wonder why we still have these things; the war was so long ago now. No one cares.” This was a very strange thing for me to say, since most of my family (including my own parents) served in the Second World War, and my grandfathers and other relatives served in the First World War. At 5:30 am on the following morning my dad’s alarm clock sounded, but tragically he never woke up to turn it off. My dad passed away at the age of 63, on Remembrance Day of all days. Those words I uttered in that assembly haunt me every day, especially on November 11th.
For any of you who have been in my office, you know I have a large tribute mural to honour some of my family members who served in the First and Second World Wars, including my dad and my grandfather. However, I literally owe my very existence to a young man who paid the ultimate sacrifice. That young man was Lance Corporal Roger D. Williams, and he was my grandmother’s first husband. Roger, whose father was born in Bronte, Ontario, was 23 years old when he and 19 of his fellow Canadian Corps soldiers fell during the battle to recapture Caix in Somme, France on the 8th of August, 1918.
Every year on November 11th I remember and pay my respects to my own family members and the hundreds of thousands of other soldiers who willingly served and ultimately gave their lives so we can live freely in Canada, the greatest country in the world.
Lest we Forget.

The Academy for Mathematics and English is NOW OPEN at Upper Oakville
Shopping Centre!

The Grand Opening on September 24th was a huge success! Mayor Mr. Rob Burton
was in attendace as students received

free skill level evaluations and parents and members of the community
stopped by to learn more about this new centre.

COMPANY BACKGROUND

The Academy for Mathematics & English was launched in Canada in 1993,
with material that has been developed and improved upon by a panel of
authors
over the past 28 years. We are opening our first location in Oakville this
month.

Our mission at the Academy is to break through the learning barriers and
maximize the potential of each student so they have the confidence and
skills
to realize their greatest dreams.

At the Academy, we provide top-quality tutoring and enrichment programs
to students from kindergarden to Grade 12. We specialize in Math, English,
Chemistry and Physics.

We assist a wide variety of students. These include those who want to
maintain good grades through challenging enrichment program, as well as
those
who are experiencing problems and need to improve their understanding of
school
subjects. The Academy uses a building block approach to learning. As one
topic
builds on top of the next, students master each topic before continuing.
This
ensures a fuller understanding of each subject or topic. Students work at
their
own pace at their own workstations, in a supportive, understanding
environment,
with no peer-pressure.

Our Academy features a FREE *skill level evaluation ($150 value*)
to assess your child’s strengths and weaknesses. The results of the
evaluation
are then used to create a custom-tailored program for your child. Creating
this
individualized program will allow our tutoring system to uniquely target
your
child’s “skill gaps” and insure dramatic improvement in their level of
understanding of the subject.

HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS

We also offer high school credits through an established program with
Canada e-School, accredited by the Ministry of Education in Ontario.

Oakville Hospital Volunteer Association (OHVA) partners with Upper Oakville Shopping Centre (UOSC) on Saturday September 17th and Sunday September 18th to promote the new hospital as well as sell and promote tickets for the FIAT 500 car raffle, graciously donated by Lockwood Dodge Chrysler.

 

For the past 26 years, the Clothesline® program in Canada has established itself as a national movement asking all Canadians to keep Clothesline® in mind while cleaning and make a gently used clothing or small household item donation.
